I would attempt to explain this - but instead i will say it was inspired by film: 1980's science fiction and late 1700's "phantasmagoria" - a form of French theater which relied on a modified magic lantern to project frightening images such as skeletons, demons, and ghosts onto walls, smoke, or semi-transparent screens.
